How to offload information using Macrovision SAMreport into a RAW file for Open iT License Analyzer collection.

Using SAMreport (version 3.6)

(Only for daemons prior to version 10.8. For later version, use FLEXnet Manager.)

Figure 1

  • Select Report Type to be RAW.
  • Specify the Start- and Stop date and time as (US format, dd/dd/yyyy HH:MM:SS) well as the Output filename. Use a logical name by which it will be easy to identify, especially if you’re about to offload a large number of files.
  • Under the "Filter" Tab, make sure to switch on "Used" and switch off the rest. We’re only interested in the Used licenses!

Figure 2

  • Under the "Advanced" Tab, make sure to specify the semi-colon(;) as the separator for data fields.
  • Now, click on "Browse" and, using the directory/files selector select the appropriate FLEXnet report log files. Consider to select only the files needed for the report plus or minus one day. Just to make sure you have all data that falls inside the selected Start and Stop Dates.
    • Open the sub-directory containing the right FLEXnet report log files for the required daemon. Click once on the folder and then on "Open".
    • Select the report log files that cover the period for which data needs to be offloaded. The filenames reflect the day for which data was collected inside the log file.
  • Then, it’s best to save the configuration by clicking on "File" and selecting "Save Configuration".
  • Now you will need to edit the configuration file using a text editor, and add the following lines at the bottom:

-field count
-field duration
-field event
-field event_time
-field event_end_time
-field group
-field user
-field user_display
-field user_flexver
-field user_hostname
-field user_ipaddr
-field user_platform
-field user_product_version
-field user_project
-field user_vendor_def
-field vendor_string
-field why

Example configuration file:

-name "Raw"
-descrip "Raw Usage Report"
-report_type raw
-input "E:\FlexLM\Report\licsrv\myhost-licsrv.20070930.rl"
-input "E:\FlexLM\Report\licsrv\myhost-licsrv.20071001.rl"
-output "O:\SAMcollector\licsrv_TEST.rif"
-delim ";"
-event_type used
-rif
-feat_uniq name
-startdate "01/10/2007 00:00:00"
-enddate "01/10/2007 23:59:59"
-field count
-field duration
-field event
-field event_time
-field event_end_time
-field group
-field user
-field user_display
-field user_flexver
-field user_hostname
-field user_ipaddr
-field user_platform
-field user_product_version
-field user_project
-field user_vendor_def
-field vendor_string
-field why

  • 5. Save the configuration file from the editor, and return to the SAMreport interface.
  • 6. Select: "File -> Load configuration" and select the file you’ve just edited and saved.
  • 7. Run the job by pressing the button.

Please note that depending on the quality of the report-log files, error messages may be displayed inside the status area of SAMreport. Most of these messages can be safely ignored. (Most of these messages will not lead to significant data gaps in your output data!). Also, depending on the amount of data, this process can take a while to complete.

A handy utility program is ssreport.exe that comes as part of SAMreport. This utility may be nice if you’re unsure about the version, or start and end date of the data contained inside the report log file. Remember, it’s an encrypted binary file that can not be read without the proper proprietary tools!
